BELKYRA™ contains deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and assists in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into targeted areas beneath the chin, BELKYRA™ disrupts the membrane of fat cells, leading to their permanent destruction. The body’s natural processes then clear the cell debris over several weeks. Once eliminated, the treated fat cells do not regenerate, making results long-lasting when a stable weight is maintained. Clinical studies have shown measurable reductions in submental fullness and high patient satisfaction with contour improvement.

A BELKYRA™ session typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes. A series of small injections is administered using a fine needle. Patients may experience mild stinging or burning during the procedure, which resolves quickly. Most treatment plans require two to four sessions spaced at least four weeks apart, although the exact number depends on the amount of submental fullness and the desired outcome.

BELKYRA™ is FDA and Health Canada approved for the reduction of submental fat beneath the chin. In select cases, it may also be used in small, localized areas of unwanted fat, such as along the jawline or near the jowls, to improve facial definition. It is best suited for patients with mild to moderate submental fullness and good skin elasticity, as it does not address skin laxity directly.

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common for several days post BELKYRA™ treatment, and some patients also experience temporary firmness or numbness in the treated area. Results develop gradually over three to four months as the body metabolizes the destroyed fat cells. Once the desired contour is achieved, retreatment is not expected.
